The test transfers real data to measure your speed — roughly 20–250 MB depending on how fast your connection is. If you're on a limited mobile data package, run it on WiFi. Results vary with WiFi coverage, device age, time of day and server distance.

The 30-second version: Plug your laptop into the router with a LAN cable, close everything else, switch off your VPN, open a speed test, pick a UAE server, and run it three times. If the cabled result matches your plan, your line is fine and your problem is WiFi. If it doesn't, the problem is the line — and you now have proof.

What Is an Internet Speed Test?

An internet speed test works like a stopwatch with a delivery van. The tool sends a chunk of test data from a nearby server to your device, times how long it takes to arrive, and converts that into a speed. Then it does the same in reverse to measure upload. Finally it sends a tiny signal and times the round trip to measure ping.

That is genuinely all it is. There is no magic in the needle — the moving internet speed test meter you see on screen is just live throughput while the transfer is happening. The number that matters is the settled figure at the end, not the highest point the needle touched.

A speed test measures four things:

Speed is capacity. Ping is responsiveness. You need both, and a very fast line with bad ping still makes for terrible Teams calls.

How to Test Internet Speed — 7 Steps

Here is exactly how to test internet speed so the result is trustworthy. Skip these steps and you are measuring your WiFi, your laptop, or your neighbour's microwave — not your connection.

Step 1 — Stop everything else using the internet

Pause Netflix and YouTube on every TV and phone. Quit cloud sync (Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud), game updates, and Windows updates. A single 4K stream running in the next room can take 25 Mbps out of your result.

Step 2 — Use a LAN cable if you possibly can

Plug the laptop straight into the router's Gigabit Ethernet port. This is the single biggest accuracy improvement available to you, because it removes WiFi from the equation completely. A cabled test measures your line; a WiFi test measures your line minus whatever the wireless loses.

Step 3 — If you must use WiFi, stand next to the router

Within two or three metres, no walls in between, connected to the 5GHz band rather than 2.4GHz. Then repeat the test from where you normally work — the difference between those two numbers is your WiFi coverage problem, and it is a completely separate issue from your plan speed.

Step 4 — Turn off your VPN

A VPN sends your traffic through a server in another country and back. It will reduce your speed and inflate your ping every single time. Switch it off before testing.

Step 5 — Choose a server inside the UAE

Most tools auto-select the closest server, but check it. If the test is measuring against a server in Frankfurt or Singapore, your ping will read 120 ms instead of 8 ms and your speed will look far worse than it is. For a realistic result, use a Dubai or Abu Dhabi server.

Step 6 — Run the test three times

Networks fluctuate second to second. Run it three times, thirty seconds apart, and take the middle number. If all three results are wildly different, that instability is itself the finding — note it down.

Step 7 — Write down all four numbers

Download, upload, ping, jitter — plus the date, time, and whether you tested on WiFi or cable. Three or four of these records over a week is what turns "my internet is slow" into a support ticket that gets resolved quickly.

Test at the right time too. Networks are busiest between roughly 8pm and 11pm when everyone in the building is streaming. Test once during the day and once in the evening — if only the evening result is poor, you are seeing peak-hour congestion, not a fault.

An example, read properly

Say you are on a 250 Mbps plan and your test shows: download 238 Mbps, upload 24 Mbps, ping 7 ms, jitter 2 ms. That is a healthy connection — the 12 Mbps shortfall is normal protocol overhead, not a fault.

Now say the same plan tests at: download 61 Mbps, upload 23 Mbps, ping 9 ms, jitter 3 ms. Note that upload and ping are perfectly fine. That combination almost always means WiFi or the device — not the line. A line fault usually degrades ping and jitter too.

And a third: download 240 Mbps, upload 25 Mbps, ping 8 ms idle but 180 ms under load. Speeds are perfect and calls are still terrible. That is bufferbloat — your router filling its buffers when saturated. It is fixed in the router, not by buying more speed.

How Internet Speed Is Measured (Mbps Explained Simply)

Internet speed is measured in Mbps — megabits per second. It is not a measure of how fast data travels; it is a measure of how much data can move at once.

The road analogy

Think of your connection as a road. Bandwidth (Mbps) is the number of lanes — more lanes means more cars pass per minute. Ping is the speed limit — it decides how quickly one car gets from A to B. Adding lanes to a road with a 20 km/h limit does not make a single journey faster, which is exactly why upgrading from 250 Mbps to 500 Mbps does not fix laggy video calls.

The bit vs byte trap (this one confuses everyone)

Internet speed is sold in bits (Mbps). File sizes on your computer are in bytes (MB). There are 8 bits in a byte, so:

Divide Mbps by 8 to get real download speed in MB per second.
100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB per second. So a 2 GB file (2,048 MB) takes about 2 minutes 45 seconds — not 20 seconds.

Notice how the gap narrows. Going from 25 to 100 Mbps transforms daily life. Going from 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps saves seventeen seconds on a 2 GB file. Past a certain point you are buying headroom for simultaneous users, not speed for one.

Add up the heaviest things that genuinely run at the same time, then add 50% headroom.
Example: two 4K streams (50) + one Teams call (4) + browsing on three phones (15) = 69 Mbps. Add 50% headroom = about 105 Mbps. A 250 Mbps plan gives that household plenty of room, and a 1 Gbps plan is money spent on a number rather than an experience.
